Greece is undergoing a major digital transformation in its tax and finance sector, led by EUSOME project partner, the Hellenic Ministry of Digital Governance! Leveraging big data, drones, and AI , the country is tackling widespread tax evasion and moving beyond past economic challenges.The new high-tech overhaul, at the heart of the system, is centered on an ultramodern digital center where algorithms analyze millions of real-time transactions across electronic payment, customs, and bank records to flag anomalies with a high potential for illegal activity. Complementing this analysis, drones and live surveillance feeds are deployed to monitor remote and physical locations—from island ports and restaurants to hidden grain silos—providing inspectors with real-time visual evidence to execute targeted raids. This sweeping digitalization effort has been credited with generating a budget surplus, increasing government revenues, and successfully restoring Greece’s sovereign bonds to investment grade.
